Frequently Asked Questions

  • The age of your water cylinder will play a part in determining whether to replace it or have it repaired.

You may experience problems such as a drop in water pressure or lack of hot water entirely. Wear and tear can cause cracks or damage to the inner tank, in which case the cylinder will need replacing as this cannot be repaired.

It’s also worth considering that older cylinders are generally less efficient and will incur higher running costs simply due to older technology.

If you’re unsure whether your cylinder needs repairing or replacing, feel free to contact our helpful team to discuss your options.

  • Pressure is the force that pushes water through the pipes (measured in Kilopascals, “kPa”). The system your house relies on will determine your pressure and flow of hot water, as well as the time it takes for your water to heat.

The low pressure water system was installed in all houses in New Zealand until the 1990s. This system supplied water at 75 kPa. If your home runs on the low pressure system, you may experience long wait times for hot water, struggle to get a decent pressure while showering and notice changes in flow when someone else uses water in the house.

Households with mains pressure get a much stronger supply at around 500 kPa, which provides more consistent water flow and temperature. If your house was built after the 1990s, you likely have mains pressure.

If you’re still unsure which system you have, take a look at your cylinder for a sticker that says “Low” or “High”. Another clue is that low pressure cylinders can only be stored inside due to their copper/enamel lining.

You can switch from low pressure to mains pressure when you change your cylinder. This simple update will add value to your property and greatly improve your general comfort at home. It may also help you cut down on your electricity and water bills by promoting more efficient water usage.
